We track, verify, and review portable power stations and the accessories that go with them, so you do not have to cross-reference a dozen spec sheets and a forum thread to find a power station that will not let you down during an outage.

Why This Site Exists

James Ndungu has spent his working life around electrical equipment, on both the trade side and the engineering side. Reading a specification sheet is not a challenge for him. Finding one worth reading turned out to be.

The information on portable power stations is scattered. A capacity figure sits on one site, a teardown on another, a fan noise measurement in the middle of a forty-minute video, a warranty term buried in a PDF. Comparison sites stack specifications side by side but say nothing about which accessories fit which model. Retail listings mention the accessories and bury the specifications three paragraphs deep in marketing copy.

No single source gives you the whole picture. So the research takes days, and it takes days even for someone who works with this equipment professionally. For a buyer without that background, it is worse.

Power Station Geek is the site he could not find. One place where the specifications are verified, the scores are built the same way for every unit, and the accessories that actually work with a model are listed beside it.

What We Do

Power Station Geek is an independent review and comparison database for portable power stations and their accessories: solar panels, expansion batteries, charging cables, and adapters. We track capacity, inverter output, battery chemistry, and charging speed across every major brand, verify those numbers against source documentation, and score each unit so you can compare models honestly rather than reading marketing copy with a star rating attached.

It is built for anyone who wants reliable backup power without guessing: homeowners planning for outages, campers and RV owners who care about weight and noise, and off-grid or solar setups where charging efficiency decides whether the system works.

How We Review

We don’t publish a manufacturer’s spec sheet with a review title slapped on it. Every unit goes through the same process:

Battery Safety and Chemistry Cell type and rated cycle life, because LiFePO4 and NMC age very differently.
Real World Efficiency and Output How much advertised capacity actually reaches the outlets, plus continuous and surge power.
UPS and EPS Switchover Speed How fast it takes over when the grid fails, and whether it arms itself.
Port Selection and Distribution The output array is weighted according to how the unit will realistically be used.
Solar Charging and MPPT Input ceiling, voltage window, and tracking under partial shade.
AC Recharge Speed Time from empty on a wall outlet, and whether the rate is adjustable.
Noise and Thermal Management Fan decibels under sustained load, and whether it throttles when hot.
Portability and Build Quality Weight against capacity, handles, casing, and screen readability outdoors.
Expandability and Ecosystem Expansion battery support, connector standards, and warranty backing.
App, Display, and Telemetry Whether the onboard readings match reality, and whether the app works off-grid.

Each category is scored from 1 to 10, and the overall score is the plain average of those ten, and nothing is adjusted afterward, so you can always see which category pulled a score down. Our full methodology explains what sits behind each one.

Our Independence Pledge

  • No pay-for-placement. No manufacturer or retailer can purchase a better score, a higher ranking, or a guaranteed positive review.
  • Affiliate transparency. We earn a commission when you buy through some links on this site. It costs you nothing extra, and never affects your score – our ratings are set before we ever check what the link pays.
  • Corrections, not deletions. When a manufacturer recalls a unit or updates a model, we update the listing within 48 hours and note the change – we don’t quietly bury the old data.
  • Methodology first. Every score is generated the same way for every model, so a comparison between two power stations is fair.
  • The commission is flat. We earn the same whether a unit scores a nine or a four, which is precisely why the score cannot be bought and why we can afford to publish the flaws.

Our Story

Power Station Geek started with a home backup search that should have taken an afternoon and took a week instead. We were trying to find the right unit for our own home, and quickly ran into the same wall most buyers do: comparison sites let you stack specs side by side, but none of them told you which accessories – solar panels, expansion batteries, cables – actually worked with the model you were looking at. Meanwhile, the marketplace listings that did mention compatible accessories buried the actual specs three paragraphs deep in marketing copy, forcing us to hunt through walls of text to find a single watt-hour number.

So we built the site we couldn’t find: one place to compare power station specs side by side at a glance, with compatible accessories listed right alongside each model – no digging, no guessing, no tabs open to four different sites to confirm one cable will fit one power station.

Who Runs This

James Ndungu founded Power Station Geek and writes the reviews. His background is in electrical equipment, across both trade and engineering work, and the way this site tests comes largely out of his own Jeep 4xe overland build. Living off a battery in the field teaches you quickly which specifications matter and which ones were written for a marketing page.

Every review carries his byline and a date. If a number on this site is wrong, there is a name attached to it and an inbox that answers.
