What Still Requires Checking

Self-arming is not universal. Fewer than a third of the machines we have tested have their own inverter, and the specification sheet often does not indicate this. Ask directly.

How to Buy Well in This Tier

1. Target $0.45 per watt-hour or better

The tier averages $0.,50 and the best machine reaches $0.26. With twenty-three machines in this band, there is no reason to accept a pt above the average value, because the alternatives are plentiful.

2. Settle the self-arming question first

t this price, you are buying household backup, and household backup that requires a person to be present to work is not backup. Ask explicitly whether the inverter arms itself when the grid drops.

3. Compare usable capacity, not rated capacity

Every machine loses energy converting stored power into household power. From a 2,000 Wh pack, a 91% charge gives you roughly 260 Wh more than a 78% charge. That is close to two extra hours of refrigerator time for the same nominal capacity.

4. Decide the location before you order

The average weight here is 55 lbs, and the heaviest is 91. Measure the narrowest doorway and the highest step between the delivery point and where the machine will be located, and check the fan noise rating if that room shares a wall with a bedroom.

5. Ask whether you actually need split-phase

A few machines at the top of this tier offer 240V output. If nothing in your home sits on a two-pole breaker, you do not need it, and you will pay for capability you cannot use.

How We Test and Score

Every runtime figure comes from tested usable capacity, measured at the AC outlets and the twelve-volt output separately, rather than from the rating printed on the machine.

Price per watt-hour is calculated from rated capacity and the price recorded at the time of testing, so it compares consistently across all reviewed power stations.

Fan noise is measured under load at a fixed distance, and inverter noise is recorded separately because some machines whine independently of airflow.

Output voltage is measured because a machine delivering less than its rated watts within the accepted band makes motors work harder.

Scores are the simple average of ten categories, calculated before anyone determines which affiliate program a product belongs to.
