Run your loads on twelve volts wherever you can

  • On several machines in this tier, the DC output returns far more power than the AC sockets do. The widest gap we have measured anywhere is fifteen points, on a machine in this band.
  • That is worth nearly a fifth of the battery, depending on which socket you plug into. A camp fridge run on DC rather than through the inverter can last several hours longer on the same charge.
  • The inverter also carries a standby cost. Several machines here shed 2 to 5 percent of their charge per hour when armed, so switch them off between uses.

Calculating Your Daily Campsite Power Consumption

Four steps, in order. Do this before shopping rather than after.

  1. List every device and its running watts. A camp fridge is roughly 45W, a CPAP 40W, lighting 30W, phone and laptop charging 80W.
  2. Multiply each by the hours it runs per day. A fridge cycling for 12 effective hours consumes 540 Wh; a CPAP for 8 hours consumes 320 Wh.
  3. Add them up, then add 20 percent for conversion losses. That total is your daily consumption in watt-hours.
  4. Compare that to the tested usable capacity, not the rating on the box. A 600Wh machine typically delivers 480 to 540Wh at the sockets.

If your daily figure exceeds usable capacity, you either need solar to replenish during the day or a machine from the tier above.

How to Choose One

1. Compare DC conversion, not just capacity

If your build runs on twelve volts, the DC figure is the one that matters. The best machines here return over 90 percent through the twelve-volt output; the weakest return less than 80 percent.

2. Check the DC socket rating

A 12-volt outlet rated at less than 150 watts will not power a compressor fridge plus anything else. The better machines here reach 145-167 watts.

3. Prioritize fan noise if it sleeps in your space

This tier contains machines at 46 decibels and machines at 60 decibels, which is more than three times as loud in perceived terms. Canvas absorbs nothing, so in a tent, that difference decides whether you sleep.

4. Check the solar voltage floor for foldable panel pairing

Most machines here engage from 11 or 12 volts, so a single foldable panel works immediately. A few need higher voltage before they start accepting a charge at all.

5. Do not expect blackout backup

Almost nothing in this tier has a working transfer function. These are batteries you carry, not household protection.

How We Test and Score

  • Every runtime figure comes from tested usable capacity, measured at the AC outlets and the twelve-volt output separately, rather than from the rating printed on the machine.
  • Fan noise is measured under load at a fixed distance, and inverter noise is recorded separately because some machines whine independently of airflow.
  • Output voltage is measured because a machine delivering less than its rated watts within the accepted band makes motors work harder.
  • Scores are the simple average of 10 categories, calculated before anyone checks which affiliate program a product belongs to.
