A recreational power station is one you carry rather than install. Everything about the class follows from that: modest capacity, an inverter sized for devices rather than appliances, and a weight one person can move without planning.
Of the power stations we have reviewed and tested, a few fall into this class. We recommend power stations that run from 240Wh to 992Wh, deliver 200 to 1,200 watts continuously, and weigh between 7.4 and 24 pounds.

Capacity tells you how long something runs. Continuous output tells you whether it turns on at all — and in this class, output is the binding constraint far more often than capacity. The runtimes below assume a mid-class machine rated at around 600 Wh, delivering roughly 500 Wh usable after conversion losses. Adjust up or down for the machine you are looking at.

On small machines, the twelve-volt output is often far more efficient than the AC sockets. Across this class, the gap runs from 2 to 15.
One machine we tested returns 74% of its pack through the sockets and 89% through DC—a difference worth nearly a fifth of the battery. On packs this small, that decides how long your trip lasts.
If your kit can run on 12V or USB, run it on those and leave the inverter off.
This is the only class where weight is the deciding specification, because these machines get carried. Across most power stations we have listed here, we have tested the spread runs from 7.4 pounds to 24, more than triple.
Work out how far you actually carry it. For backpacking, under 15 pounds is the practical ceiling, which in this class means under about 400Wh. For car camping, anything up to 25 pounds is comfortable.
Watt-hours per pound is the number that tells you whether the weight is buying anything. The best machine in this class returns over 45 watt-hours per pound; the worst returns barely 20.
Continuous output is your real ceiling. A surge is a brief allowance for motors starting and cannot be used for sustained loads.
A machine rated for 300 watts continuous will not run a 500-watt appliance at all, regardless of the appliance’s capacity. In this class, output rules out more loads than capacity does.
This is where the class splits sharply. Some machines charge internally at 350-600 watts and refill in under an hour. Others charge at 60 to 120 watts through an external brick and take four to six.
Solar specifications have three numbers, and buyers read only the first. The wattage is the ceiling; the voltage range decides which panels work at all.
Most machines in this class accept 11 or 12 volts upward, so a single foldable panel engages immediately. A few stop at 23.5 to 30 volts at the top, which excludes essentially every rigid panel made.
If you already own panels, check their voltage against the machine’s window before anything else.
Only one machine in this class has a working transfer function, and it drains itself in about a day while waiting to use it.
A recreational machine is a battery you carry with you. If you want something that catches a power cut, look at the Home Backup class instead.
Every runtime figure comes from tested usable capacity, measured at the outlets and at the twelve-volt output separately, not from the rating printed on the machine.
Fan noise is measured under load at a fixed distance, and we record inverter noise separately because some machines whine independently of any airflow.
Output voltage is measured because a machine delivering its rated watts at 110 volts instead of 120 volts forces motors to work harder.
Scores are the simple average of ten categories, calculated before anyone determines which affiliate program a product belongs to.
Buy for weight first, output second, charging speed third. Capacity matters least because, in this class, the inverter runs out before the battery does.
And route everything you can onto twelve volts and USB. Unpacking small is the single easiest way to get more out of the machine you bought.
