My Quick Verdict

The Explorer 500 is the largest of the older Jackery units and the one where the generational problems show most clearly.

Five hundred watts continuous from 518Wh is a sensible match, output is clean at 1.8% distortion, and 1.06% hourly idle drain is genuinely good, better than several current units.

But the cells are nickel-manganese-cobalt, rated at 500 cycles, producing $1.00 per charge, and the solar input is 100 watts against a 518Wh pack.

That works out at seven and a half hours to fill from panels, which is the slowest solar ratio of anything in this comparison.

Best for: Occasional camping where the unit is charged from mains before each trip.

Not for: Solar charging, regular cycling, or anyone comparing the cost of ownership.
